Punjab Orders Fast Emergency Response Code in Hospitals

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed all government hospitals to quickly set up a Red & Blue Code emergency system, a globally used setup for handling serious medical cases. She emphasized that this must be in place within two days, with staff trained and ready for emergencies.

Monitoring Teams and Audits for Better Care

To ensure these reforms happen, a Health Vigilance Squad will inspect hospitals and report directly to the Chief Minister’s office. Hospitals will also face audits that include checking equipment, reviewing patient deaths, laboratory work, nursing care, and cleanliness.

New Equipment and Specialist Visits

Each district and teaching hospital must now have ventilators for both adults and children. Maryam Nawaz also ordered heart specialists to visit district hospitals twice a week until permanent catheter labs are built.

Cleaner Communication and Stronger Rules

To reduce distractions, mobile phones will be banned for nurses and paramedical staff during shifts. A reliable pager system will be introduced. Hospitals must display guidelines for student nurses and ensure that only experienced staff handle patients.

Better Medicine and Security Systems

Chief Minister Sharif instructed all hospitals to keep essential medicines in stock and display the list publicly every day. Hospitals must also ensure CCTV cameras are active, establish a neutral officer for complaints, and set up trauma care zones near emergency areas.
